Hmong are one of the hill tribes that live in Thailand. There are two major sub groups in Thailand namely the White and Blue. These people are found mainly in China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Some years ago the rice farmers of Thailand experienced a severe drought period. The king, who since many years had been involved in helping the rural population of Thailand invented a method to make rain, for which he also filed an international patent. Historic evidence shows that this tradition has been around already since the 13th century. Mai dat have their own style - there are not as tiny as the Japanese bonsai, but rather often bigger. Also, while with Japanese bonsai the aim is usually to make the small tree look at natural as possible, mai dat are supposed to look particularly well-trimmed. It is the aim of the mai dat artist to create a tree which is made according to human shapes. Thailand is a country which used to be covered almost completely in forest and swampland - it was a tropical wilderness. Only in recent decades have the forests been cleared and turned into farms and cities. Thus, imitating nature is not what Thais consider beautiful.

It is a traditional Thai believe that the King is a human reincarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. However, once upon a time, there was a tram running through Bangkok. The Tram network in Bangkok was established in 1894 and got closed down in 1968. Actually, even as early as 1888 there was a guy called Alfred John Loftus (Phraya Nithetcholthee) who operated a tramway line in Bangkok - drawn by horses! However, after a couple of changes of ownership, the horse-drawn wagons where replaced with electric wagons. New routes were opened and built, until in 1968 the last tramway in Bangkok was stoped.

For example, I know of the case of a 15 year old boy who decided to be a ladyboy - and indeed dressed, talks and behaves like a woman now. However, schoolmates never made fun, teased or bullied him about it. This being a remote village and not modern Bangkok, it speaks a lot of the tolerance of Thai people towards people who decide to "be different".

This might be odd: but many (completely straight) men grow long fingernails. Most commonly is the nail of the small finger. Part of this is because in rural Thailand, long fingernails where indeed a sign of a certain social status: a farmer can't grow long fingernails, because they will simply break during the hard work on the fields. In fact, in Isaan (North-East Thailand) it is even believed that a long nail at the small finger is lucky. Deep Fried Critters in Thailand

Southeast Asia is definitely a location where you can experience a different way of life. This includes some of the things you can find to eat on the streets of the cities.

There is a certain aspect to being a tourist that can make you wonder a bit. The issue is whether some of the things you experience are things the locals really do or just something setup to see how gullible tourists are. In Southeast Asia, this often centers on the food being eaten.

You've probably watched a few travel shows or perhaps Bizarre Foods that have centered on Asia. The show will focus on the daily meals of locals, but also bring in the oddity that seems primarily to be tailored to the tourist crowd. You know - fried cow testicles, eyes and what have you. The Thailand version of the mystery meal is found with the odd deep friend critters you find in kiosks on the road.

Let's start with the basics. Can you really buy fried spiders and other bugs on the side of the road? Yes, you can. The stranger the food stuff, the more likely it is to be found crisped up on a stick. The food ranges from big spiders to crickets to roaches to...well, anything you can stick on the pointy end of the stick.

The eating process is also fairly uniform. The kiosks tend to be in locations where tourists congregate. More pointedly, the locations are ones where tourists tend to congregate to consume adult beverages. You don't see fried spider kiosks outside the local museum, but they can always be found outside of the bars. This should tell you a lot.

So, what does fried spider taste like? It tastes like fried cricket, roach and so on. The basic cooking approach seems to be to fry the insect until it is extremely overdone. There is no taste other than the oil. This should also be another clue as to whether locals eat these things.

Having spent many months in Thailand, I can tell you that locals will occasionally eat the odd cooked insect. That being said, it is very rare. The fried critters you find on the side of the road outside of adult beverage establishments tend to be tailored for the tourists. This tends to be true around the world, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the same goes for Thailand.

If you feel like trying a deep fried spider in Thailand, have at it. Just don't assume the locals munch on them every night!

Koh Larn is an island just a hop and a skip away from Pattaya. If you travel to the island by ferry the ride is 45, or hop on a speed boat to get there in ten! Koh Larn is famous for their white sandy beaches and off shore coral reefs. Go snorkeling or take a tour on a glass bottom boat. The water contrasts the white sand as it is turquoise, clear, and warm. The island also offers water skiing, parasailing, jet skis, henna tattoos, and wonderfully exotic cuisine.
